Frequently asked questions
What first-time visitors ask about World Peace Pagoda.
Is there an entry fee for the World Peace Pagoda?+
Entry to the World Peace Pagoda is completely free for all visitors. You may however pay a small fee for the boat ride across Phewa Lake if you choose that approach route.
What is the best time of day to visit?+
Sunrise is widely considered the best time, when the Himalayan peaks including Annapurna and Machhapuchhre glow in the early light and crowds are minimal. Sunset is a popular second option, offering golden reflections over Phewa Lake.
How long should I plan to spend at the pagoda?+
Most visitors spend between 30 minutes and one hour at the pagoda itself. Factor in extra time for the hike up or the boat-and-hike combination, which can add another 30 to 60 minutes each way.
How do I get to the World Peace Pagoda from Pokhara?+
The most scenic route is to take a rowboat or paddleboat across Phewa Lake from the Lakeside area and then hike uphill through forest for about 20 to 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can reach it by road via Damside and hike up from the southern side.
Is there a dress code or etiquette I should follow?+
As a functioning Buddhist stupa, modest clothing is respectful โ shoulders and knees covered are appreciated. Remove your shoes before stepping onto the main platform surrounding the pagoda, and walk clockwise around the stupa in keeping with Buddhist tradition.
Can I take photographs at the pagoda?+
Photography is generally permitted and the site is extremely popular for its panoramic shots of the Himalayas and Phewa Lake. Be respectful when photographing worshippers or monks, and avoid using flash inside any shrine areas.
Is the World Peace Pagoda accessible for visitors with mobility difficulties?+
The pagoda sits atop a steep hill and both main approach routes involve significant uphill walking on uneven paths, making it challenging for visitors with limited mobility. The road approach from the south is somewhat more manageable but still involves a climb.
What is the best season to visit Pokhara and the pagoda?+
October through December offers the clearest Himalayan views with crisp post-monsoon skies, making it the most popular season. March to May is also good, though spring haze can sometimes obscure the peaks.
What other attractions can I combine with a visit to the pagoda?+
A boat ride on Phewa Lake and a visit to the Tal Barahi Temple on the lake island pair naturally with the pagoda trip. The Lakeside district with its cafes and shops, and the International Mountain Museum, are also close by in Pokhara.
Who built the World Peace Pagoda and what is its significance?+
The pagoda was built by the Japanese Buddhist Nipponzan-Myohoji order and inaugurated in 1996 as part of a global network of peace pagodas. It is one of over 80 such structures worldwide, symbolising world peace and the teachings of the Buddha.
