Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu

Foreign visitors are required to pay a monument entry fee collected at the gate of the Boudhanath area, though the exact amount can change seasonally so check current rates locally or with your hotel. Nepali citizens generally enter free. The fee goes toward preservation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Early morning and dusk are the most atmospheric times, when monks, pilgrims, and locals perform the kora (circumambulation) with butter lamps lit and chanting filling the air. Arriving around sunrise also helps you avoid the midday crowds and heat.

Most visitors spend one to two hours exploring the stupa, spinning the prayer wheels, and wandering the surrounding lanes of monasteries and shops. If you plan to visit a rooftop café for views or explore nearby gompas in depth, budget half a day.

There is no strict dress code, but modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful at this active religious site. Always walk clockwise around the stupa, as this is the correct direction for Buddhist circumambulation, and remove your shoes before entering any monastery or shrine room.

Photography of the stupa and the surrounding area is generally permitted and welcomed. However, always ask permission before photographing monks, pilgrims, or people at prayer, and be discreet inside monastery halls where photography may be restricted.

Boudhanath is located about 8 km northeast of Thamel and is easily reached by taxi, ride-hailing apps like Pathao or InDrive, or local minibuses from Ratna Park. A taxi from Thamel typically takes 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.

The main circular path around the stupa is paved and relatively flat, making it manageable for wheelchairs and those with limited mobility. The surrounding lanes and rooftop cafés involve steps, so some areas may be difficult to access.

October through December and February through April offer the clearest skies, mild temperatures, and the best overall experience. The monsoon season from June to September brings heavy rain but also lush greenery and fewer tourists if you don't mind the wet weather.

Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred Hindu sites in Asia, is only about 2 km away and makes a natural pairing for a half-day itinerary. The hilltop stupa of Kopan Monastery is also nearby for those interested in a quieter meditation-focused setting.

Losar, the Tibetan New Year celebrated in February or March, is one of the most vibrant times to visit Boudhanath, with colorful ceremonies, masked dances, and large gatherings of the Tibetan Buddhist community. Buddha Jayanti, marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death, is another major celebration held here each May.
