The traditional approach involves climbing 365 steep stone steps up the eastern staircase, which is challenging for visitors with limited mobility. There is an alternative vehicle road that winds around the hill to the top, allowing those who cannot manage the stairs to still reach the main stupa platform.

General photography of the stupa, views, and grounds is widely permitted and welcomed, but you should always ask permission before photographing monks, pilgrims, or people at prayer. Avoid pointing cameras directly into active prayer or ritual spaces out of respect.

Swayambhunath pairs naturally with the nearby National Museum of Nepal, which is just a short walk away. From there, Thamel, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple are all reachable within the same day for a full Kathmandu heritage circuit.

The large painted eyes on all four sides of the stupa's tower represent the all-seeing wisdom eyes of the Buddha, gazing out in the four cardinal directions. The symbol between them resembles a nose but is actually the Nepali number one, representing the unity of all things — it is one of the most iconic images in Nepali Buddhism.
