Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the main temple complex, but visitors of all faiths are welcome to explore the surrounding ghats, shrines, and forested areas on the eastern bank of the Bagmati River. The views of the main pagoda from across the river are excellent and give a strong sense of the site's grandeur.

Entry to the outer areas and ghats is free for all visitors. Foreign tourists are typically charged a separate fee to access certain designated viewing areas within the broader temple precinct, so carry some Nepali rupees or US dollars just in case.

Early morning is ideal to witness the Aarti ritual at sunrise, when priests perform fire offerings on the ghats. Late afternoon is also atmospheric as the evening Aarti takes place around sunset and the golden light reflects beautifully off the river.

Most visitors spend between one and a half to three hours exploring the ghats, outer shrines, sadhus, and riverside areas. If you arrive during a major festival like Maha Shivaratri, allow significantly more time as the site becomes very crowded and ceremonially rich.

Cremations take place openly on the ghats and are a sacred, private family affair, so observe quietly and respectfully from a distance. Do not photograph grieving families or the deceased directly, and keep your voice low in these areas.

The site involves uneven stone steps, sloped pathways, and riverside terrain that can be difficult for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Some flat viewing areas along the eastern bank are more manageable, but full accessibility throughout the complex is limited.

Dress modestly out of respect, covering shoulders and knees. Removing shoes is required when entering certain shrine areas, so sandals that slip on and off easily are practical.

Photography of the temple architecture, sadhus (with their permission and usually a small tip), and the ghats is generally allowed in the outer areas. Avoid photographing active cremations or mourning families, and never point a camera inside the main temple sanctum.

The temple is located about 5 kilometres east of Thamel and is easily reached by taxi, ride-hailing app, or local bus in roughly 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. It sits adjacent to Tribhuvan International Airport, making it a convenient first or last stop on a Kathmandu visit.

Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas in the world, is just a short walk or taxi ride away and pairs perfectly with Pashupatinath for a half-day cultural itinerary. The hilltop temple of Kopan Monastery is also nearby for those interested in Tibetan Buddhism.
